The Bear's Hug: Christian Belief and the Soviet State 1917-1986

Author: Gerald Buss

ISBN:  0802803245
Publisher: Eerdmans Pub Co - October, 1987
Format: Paperback

The Bear's Hug opens with a short historical account of the state of the Christian faith, and the Russian Orthodox Church in particular, since the 1917 Revolution.  It document how, despite the absolute separation of Church and State laid down by the Soviet Constitution, continual opposition and persecution of believers have been the hallmark of the soviet regime. The author examines the various Soviet laws that are used to arrest believers and the different types of punishments used.

Buss concludes the book with suggestions as to how individuals in the West can effectively exert pressure on the State to help those believers who are suffering for their faith.
